Mr. Flanagan joined Fowler, Schimberg and Flanagan shortly after the firm’s ten year anniversary in 1997. Previously, he had been a litigation partner in the Denver office of Kutak Rock for almost 4 years and before that had been employed by Kelly, Stansfield & O’Donnell for 20 years (15 years as a partner).

Mr. Flanagan’s professional practice has always emphasized complex commercial litigation and, more than 20 years ago, he was one of the first Colorado attorneys to achieve civil trial certification by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Mr. Flanagan has tried to conclusion over 250 commercial cases in all Colorado courts, which includes more than 100 jury trials where he was lead counsel. Approximately 80 of his clients’ cases are officially reported and these appellate opinions are often the leading Colorado decisions on many public utility, civil procedure, water right, eminent domain and environmental issues.

Mr. Flanagan’s litigation practice includes representation of corporate and individual landowner interests in the fields of water rights, eminent domain matters, and construction disputes.

Mr. Flanagan (age 58) has resided in and near Denver, Colorado for more than 40 years and is the proud father of three sons (ages 27, 24, and 21) who will sometimes hunt or fish with him.

Mr. Flanagan attended Mullen High School and was the valedictorian at John F. Kennedy High School (1968) both in Denver. He went to college on a debate scholarship and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Denver, (B.A. 1972) cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and his law degree (J.D. 1974) from the same institution, completing both degrees in less than 5 years. He speaks at professional forums, has authored a number of articles for legal publications and is active in both the litigation and water law sections of the Colorado Bar Association. He is licensed to practice law in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana and is a member of the United States Supreme Court and many other federal courts. He was a Special Assistant Attorney General in Nebraska, advising the State on interstate water matters and was appointed by the Governor of Colorado to the Judicial Nominating Commission for the First Judicial District (2005-present). Mr. Flanagan was selected as one of “Colorado’s Super Lawyers” by 5280: Denver’s Mile High Magazine (April, 2007). Currently he is a contributor and editor of “Colorado Water Law Benchbook” published by CLE in Colorado, Inc.
